• Matt Lane, Assistant Headteacher, and Yvonne Price, Assistant Headteacher, at St Peter’s Primary School, Farnworth, Bolton
Workshop Outline

This workshop focuses on school improvement and raising standards of expectation and quality in small, manageable steps. It will discuss the use of a ‘Fortnightly Focus’ in areas such as presentation, behaviour in lessons, moving around school, to ensure both adults and children have a clear understanding of their role. It will look at how St Peter’s focus on one area of school improvement for two weeks, and how the school makes this high-profile and breaks it down into five clear areas to work on. Colleagues will take away a simple, free strategy to raise basic standards in their school, which can be implemented immediately and with no cost.
•This workshop is suitable for primary or secondary colleagues who are keen to embed high expectations and raise standards of quality in their school.
Presenter’s School
An IQM National Champion for 2023/24 St Peter’s is a mainstream primary school with a small specialist SEN provision providing personalised learning for high needs SEN (5 places). There are 427 children in the two form entry school. Of these children, approximately 14% have an identified SEND. 12% of children speak English as an additional language and approximately 40% are on our pupil premium register.
Data from the most recently published school census shows that demographic deprivation statistics are high and rising.
- Over 95% live in the bottom most deprived 30% postcode in the country.
- 83% of pupils live in areas that are amongst the 10% most deprived for ‘Crime’
- 91% of pupils live in areas that are amongst the 20% most deprived for ‘Health’,
Consequently many pupils have parents and family members who struggle to find employment and/or have low incomes. Many pupils are witnesses to crime, particularly domestic violence or are victims of crime. Health deprivation is a major issue. Some parents and pupils are struggling with poor health (including mental health) and some of our pupils are young carers
