Warm and Inviting
Five Acre Wood School is a district special school in the heart of Kent with over 800 pupils. Its commitment to inclusion extends beyond conventional academic structures to encompass holistic well-being and innovative approaches. The school structures its pupils education through a range of different learning approaches.
Recognizing the importance of creating warm and inviting spaces, the Early Years Learning approach has embraced the Danish concept of ‘hygge’, infusing classrooms with a cosy and welcoming atmosphere that promotes comfort and a sense of community. This intentional focus on hygge contributes to a positive learning environment where both staff and students can feel secure, fostering emotional well-being alongside academic growth.
This sits alongside the Curiosity Approach, an innovative and child-centric pedagogy that encourages exploration, creativity, and a love for learning. Across all learning approaches Five Acre Wood School recognises the importance of curiosity in a child’s developmental journey, promoting hands-on experiences and stimulating environments that cater to diverse learning styles. Other approaches to learning include the use of SCERTS and Teacch whilst for our more able students we offer an increasing range of accreditations including functional skills and BTecs.
Unique Initatives
In a bid to further enhance the experiences for students, Five Acre Wood School continues to innovate through unique initiatives like the Outdoor Learning Environment which includes the opportunity to interact and work with a range of animals and on the land. Some students struggle to access the wider community so it is important to offer a wide range of experiences within the school culminating in the school’s ‘Woodstock festival at the end of the year. Five Acre has a double decker bus which is being developed into a soft play bus and a place to travel train. Additionally, the school is in the process of repurposing a train carriage into a cafe providing a real-world setting for students to develop social and life skills.
A crucial aspect of the school’s philosophy involves not closing doors for its students, ensuring that their adult futures are as promising as possible. By integrating innovative approaches and unconventional spaces, the school prepares students for a world beyond the classroom. This forward-thinking mindset extends to our staff, fostering an environment where professional development is continuous, and staff members are equipped with the skills needed to adapt to evolving educational landscapes.
In essence, the inclusion ethos at Five Acre Wood School goes beyond academic achievement, encompassing well-being, innovation, and a commitment to laying the groundwork for fulfilling adult lives for each and every student.
