At Stanton Community Primary School, inclusion is not an “add-on” but is a fundamental principle which is at the heart of the school. Every child is known, valued and supported. Staff have a strong positive relationship with pupils and a deep knowledge not only of needs, but individual personalities and interests. It is for these reasons that we are proud to award Stanton Community Primary the status of IQM Flagship school.

Celebrating everyone

The school is always centring and celebrating pupils. Examples include the Gold Book and Wow Work presentation in assembly, which acknowledge pupils’ achievements both outside school/at home and within school respectively. Pupils are given rewards such as trophies for displaying the six core values of the school, which include respect, resilience and kindness. Awards are not reserved for academic or sporting success – pupils can be awarded for kindness and showing each other respect. Stanton Community holds all these successes in equally high regard.

Stanton Community Primary School has been introducing a peer mediation scheme, a forward thinking and impressively implemented programme which fosters pupil voice in a powerful way, strengthens social skills, and places children in a position of responsibility. Staff have been trained in collaboration with another school in the trust, and in turn train Year 6 children to take on leadership roles in the community. There is an understanding that children might want to speak to peers rather than adults about some topics, and the peer mediation scheme allows this to happen in a safe and supportive fashion, with plans to build a hub with a café-style environment, allowing children to meet with mediators. Prospective mediators can access three days of training, showing how Stanton is committed to empowering not only staff but also learners.

Focus on wellbeing

Stanton has a particularly open culture, where mental health and emotional wellbeing are spoken about with confidence and are not considered taboo. Peer mediation builds easily on this. The school has also implemented the Hamish and Milo intervention, which has been designed by an educational psychologist and focuses on using therapy and psychological approaches to help children build positive relationships with one another and with education. The intervention features themes such as “Understanding me” “resilient me” and “my friends and me.” It encourages children of all ages to connect, and teachers have noted how it allows those who have lost contact with friends to form new friend groups.

Stanton Community Primary has developed “The Lodge” for pupils who prefer a quieter and calmer environment to have their lunch. This space is structured with noise control and sensory aids. This illustrates the careful interest and attention paid to all pupils, ensuring that everyone has access to spaces they find comfortable to eat and learn. This is furthered through the Story Dough sessions for early years learners, and the Forest School for outdoor enrichment.

The school has secured approval for a 35-space alternative provision called “The Willows,” which has been the subject of detailed planning and design. Leaders and staff have worked together and collaborated with staff from other schools to develop this. The provision is located in the centre of the school, with pupils attending school events and assemblies. The school has put a particular emphasis on working with families, building trust and providing guidance. Parents have reflected on the positive impact the provision has had for their children.

Stanton Community Primary is clearly extremely committed to inclusion and helping all children feel comfortable and supported. The school community should be very proud of all that they have achieved, and plan to achieve in the future. We are proud to award IQM Flagship School status.
