Gallions Primary School is a two-form primary school in the Borough of Newham. It is part of The New Vision Trust. The school is dedicated to academic excellence but also wants pupils to have happy memories of primary school and to promote happiness, communication, and readiness for adulthood. Gallions Primary School has a dedication to ensuring that every child must thrive. The school has a reputation within the community for inclusive practice, with generations of the same families attending the school and excellent staff retention, both of which indicate the welcoming and warm atmosphere.

Thriving and achieving

Every child, including those with SEND, are given the opportunity to thrive and achieve. Inclusion is understood in the widest sense, and it is ensured that all children are included in everything, no matter their background, abilities, culture or religion. A high percentage of pupils at the school face significant socioeconomic disadvantage and have safeguarding agency involvement. There are high levels of mobility in the local area. The school draws on the expertise of a range of external agencies and professionals, including a Speech and Language provision, an Education Mental Health Practitioner, a School Counsellor, an ELSA, and an Educational Psychologist. There are also ASD and Behavioural Specialist staff from Newham who are able to provide additional support. The school is dedicated to increasing cultural capital and prioritises experiences and enrichment opportunities. There are over 30 clubs per term, and numerous trips, many of which are fully funded. There are also before and after school provisions.

Gallions has an ARC (Additionally Resourced Centre) provision where two classes, consisting of non-verbal Autistic pupils follow an informal curriculum, and two further classes follow a semi-formal curriculum. The ARC benefits from four classrooms, a sensory area, and a soft play provision. Pupils also have access to a Cubbie area, where they select via ICT the sensory circuit they would like to complete. While pupils in this provision have a specialist offer, they are not separated from mainstream peers. Children have experiences within their classrooms, within the wider school environment, and within mainstream provision when appropriate.

Inclusion is central in all things that staff do throughout Gallions Primary School. Pastoral knowledge and understanding of pupils are a strength of the school, with exceptional support and safeguarding procedure. Senior leadership, pastoral care staff, SEND staff, and attendance staff communicate with each other, and have strong systems in place to identify and support children and families. Pupils talk about how diverse their school population is, how everybody belongs and is taken care of, and how vulnerable pupils are included. Pupils understand that different people need different amounts of support to access the same opportunities and embrace this. There is no stigma around SEND needs or accessing additional support.

Supporting every pupil

The school works hard to select books and resources to ensure everybody feels represented. Racism is discussed openly and naturally from Nursery level upwards, and pupils are given experiences which increase understanding with each other. Gallions is part of “Education for Change”, a group set up by Newham Headteachers to celebrate cultural identity and tackle racism.

There is an inclusion food culture, supported by catering staff. Pupils in the ARC provision may eat in their own areas if the main dining hall is too overwhelming. Both in the ARC rooms and the main dining room food is prepared according to pupil need. A trolley of food arriving for the ARC children included different variations on the main meal and different sandwiches. Staff are very aware of the colours, textures, and tastes that the children enjoy whilst also encouraging them to develop and extend their diets, with help from an Occupational Therapist.

The whole community shares the ambition that all must be allowed to thrive. Everyone works with the premise that there will always be a way to ensure that all learning and social opportunities can be accessed by everybody. This exemplifies inclusion and we are proud to have Gallions Primary School as a Centre of Excellence.
