Lambs Lane achieves Inclusive School

Lambs Lane Primary School is a school in rural Berkshire, with a provision for students with physical additional needs, and a growing number of pupils with SEMH needs. Due to Lambs Lane’s inclusive ethos, all pupils are in mainstream classes with only a tiny proportion out of class for some of their day. There is a powerful sense of community and unity, with everyone working together. Staff are understanding of a range of barriers to learning, with students who have complex needs being resourced and supported well. Leaders work productively with outside providers to continually enhance their school’s inclusive provision and make sure that these barriers are recognised and removed as quickly as possible.

The Head of School and IQM Coordinator lead well and effectively, inspiring innovation to give greater depth to inclusion. Staff feel supported and listened to, with problems addressed swiftly because leaders listen and adapt: “Usually within a few days there is a strategy or solution in place.”  Leaders are visible, invested and will do all to support.

Provision for children with SEND is carefully planned and managed and there is a high level of support for children with complex needs. Leaders and staff consistently review and evaluate the provision. The physical nature of the classroom is also adapted, for example in one class there was a standing desk and in another various seating supports so children can be with their peers despite being in wheelchairs or other support equipment.

Inclusive approach to behaviour

In the past year, the Behaviour Curriculum has been developed to meet the growing social, emotional and mental health needs of the children, as well as other barriers. A Behaviour Curriculum was seen as a way of gaining consistency in behaviour management, as well as gaining greater understanding of these behaviours and barriers.  The curriculum has been developed with the principles of the therapeutic thinking, with training linking to the therapeutic network locally. One of the aims has been to enable pupils to have strategies to regulate themselves and for pupils to be supported to learn to understand themselves better.

The Behaviour Curriculum has been developed in conjunction with the Wokingham Borough Council’s Partnerships for Inclusion of Neurodiversity in Schools project (PINS). The PINS project will, when activated, give further depth and challenge to the Behaviour Curriculum.

Aiding inclusion

Lambs Lane should be proud of their consistent use of Widgit visuals, which promote clarity and consistency for pupils, parents, and staff, as well as their development of environments to make them more purposeful and less overstimulating, removing clutter and reviewing displays. A Nurture Room has also been developed, and is now central to the development of pupils, their emotional intelligence and wellbeing.

Parents have been enjoying access to workshops and coffee mornings. These are times to come together, to share their celebrations and victories, as well as the challenges many families who have children with complexities face. These will also be spaces where the Behaviour Curriculum will be shared and training for parents given.

Lambs Lane have been rigorous in their pursuit of inclusion, and continue to be champions of inclusivity, even during a period of transition. The school has ambitious and inspiring plans for the future. We are proud to award them the Inclusive School Award.
