At Little Common School, the core vision is “Learning, Caring, Succeeding…together.” This illustrates how at Little Common School, inclusion isn’t something which is delivered or implemented as part of a plan but is a cornerstone of every part of school life. The theme of togetherness is a key part of relationships, decisions and learning and is prioritised at every possible opportunity.

From the very beginning of the day staff greet children and caregivers by name, respond quickly to individual needs and get to know every child. The school environment is purposeful and designed to support access for all. A great example is the front foyer, which has been made into a calm transitional space for children to prepare for the day. Parents comment on how well the school knows their children. Little Common School promotes a kind and calm sense of security and belonging.

Building Trust

Trust is a core component of how Little Common School operates. Parents are always listened to, and staff work with and build strong relationships with every parent, particularly parents and caregivers of SEND children and children with ECHPs. The school works hard to build connections between home and school, prizing openness and confidence in caring for and supporting learning. Little Common does a particularly good job at listening to everyone – children’s voices are heard and are central to the culture of trust and togetherness. Children of all ages participate in School Council meetings and share their appreciation for the school and how they are growing their independence in a supportive and inclusive environment.

A Sense of Belonging

The school recognises how important it is for children to feel a sense of belonging and reinforces this through opportunities to take part in activities, exercise agency and learn leadership skills. Pupils take the lead during breaktimes and moving between activities and zones, which contributes to everyone feeling a sense of ownership and connection. Learners can make impressive decisions about their own regulation and self-awareness is taught and encouraged. Staff support children to part in a list of fun and challenging activities laid out in the school charter to be completed before leaving primary school. These include caring for animals, growing food to eat, making and maintaining close friendships, meeting local elderly people, spending time away from home, beachcombing, and outdoor play in a woodland. These help every learner regardless of their situation build confidence, have equal access to opportunities and experiences. and feel they have an important and secure place in the community.

Constant Improvement

The leadership team at Little Common School are passionate about inclusion and are clearly committed to constantly asking questions and embracing external expertise to continue exploring new avenues for improvement.

Staff communicate and work together to create a good atmosphere and promote the central values of the school.

Recently the school has taken steps translate SEND information into accessible formats so it can be shared with everyone.

Connection with the Community

Little Common School is deeply connected and committed to its local community. A popular event is Light Up Little Common, an art and community event which is delivered in collaboration with the creatives behind the Kew Garden Christmas Lights. Learners also visit local care homes, something specifically mentioned as a target for all in the school charter, celebrating events such as VE Day and allowing the exchange of knowledge and support between the oldest and youngest members of the community. The school social media celebrates a variety of religious festivals, reflecting the diverse nature of the community they serve and making sure all feel respected. Learners at Little Common School feel included, connected, protected and supported to learn about the world they live in, themselves, and each other. This allows every child the chance to develop and grow to reach their potential.
