Goldwyn School has displayed a strong commitment to embedding inclusive culture within their school by enhancing their leadership structure and responsibilities. There is a great sense of teamwork and cohesiveness both of vision and practice. Staff coaching and opportunities to identify needs are key, and staff are supported professionally and personally. Goldwyn is at the heart of their local provision and serves other schools in the community. Goldwyn demonstrates an excellent level of inclusive practice and a high degree of motivation and momentum to pursue excellence.

The Deputy SENCo works across all sites.  They help lead the SEND strategy, oversee policy implementation, guide and quality assure annual reviews, monitor interventions and facilitate smooth transitions. Regular meetings are scheduled for key staff groups to meet and share good inclusive practice and develop school wide systems and processes.

Whole Child Inclusive Practice

Goldwyn has worked hard to develop a Whole Child Inclusive Classroom Practice. Classroom practice has been reviewed and developed further through collaboration with Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy and Educational Psychology colleagues. All Senior Leaders have undertaken “Leading a Trauma and Mental Health Informed School” training.

There is a drive to include and embed evidence-based teaching alongside other elements of support, to respond to Goldwyn’s changing demographics and current pupils. There is a recognition and drive to include and support those pupils who have experienced adverse childhood experiences and a team of practitioners has been developed, working alongside Trauma Informed Schools UK and the Kent Virtual School. All front facing staff have been trained by the Crisis Prevention Institute and there are plans to deliver this to all staff members.

Goldwyn has firmly embedded the Circle of Adults approach which works to resolve emotional needs and challenging behaviours – there are a minimum of six opportunities a year to review student support and revise how they work to support everyone.

Goldwyn has a range of extra-curricular activities including an off-site circus programme which has been particularly effective in boosting pupil self-confidence and engagement. The use of Specialist Engagement Officer has also been particularly impactful through creative work and developing strong relationships with pupils and their parents/carers.

Building strong relationships

Relationships between staff and pupils are key, with staff individualising their approaches, building on interests and considering the wider context of the young person and their family.

Parental confidence has been crucial, with staff working to reassure parents that Goldwyn can offer benefits to their children. Staff certainly go above and beyond, with one impressively building their specialist knowledge of Godzilla to engage an individual!

Understanding the experiences of students in the schools has been a revitalised commitment. Goldwyn has taken a “through the eyes of a child’ approach where a cross section of students including non-attenders, those with personal learning plans and those achieving well are tracked and monitored in depth.

These identified students are observed in every part of their day from arrival to departure to look holistically at their experiences and produce an image of the school day in detail.  This approach is indicative of the way Goldwyn looks holistically at individuals and their environment and experiences.
