Essex Primary School has a long history of inclusion and inclusive practice. It is a highly inclusive setting where relationships between adults and pupils are clearly at the heart of success. There is a strong sense of community, care and belonging. Every pupil is known, valued and supported to thrive. There are good relationships between adults and children, with consistently calm, respectful and purposeful interactions.

Pupil voice has a strong presence within the school community and is deeply respected and valued. Large displays showcasing pupil work are evident everywhere, celebrating the individuality of every child. Sensory panels are placed throughout shared spaces, and the environment is supportive. The school feels vibrant, and responsive to needs.

Essex Primary School is impressively in its twelfth year as a flagship school, and this longevity is underpinned by its commitment to reflection and improvement. The provision is not static but personalised, with staff emphasising that “we make it personalised”. Staff training is constantly reviewed and increased to meet the changing needs of pupils. There is a strong emphasis placed on the safety of pupils and ensuring they enjoy learning. Staff demonstrate a deep understanding of each pupil and can make sure they feel secure, supported and engaged in learning.

The physical environment of the school is used exceptionally well. Classrooms are purposefully designed, and no space is wasted. Areas that might otherwise be unused have been transformed into quiet spaces for pupils who require this calmer environment to thrive. Communication Passports are used excellently as a tool to ensure that all adults working with a child can communicate effectively and consistently. This ensures consistency and continuity of care.

Visual supports are embedded across the school, reflecting a commitment to accessible communication. Staff give all children equal access to resources, reinforcing the principle that inclusive strategies should benefit all pupils, not just those with identified needs. A nursery library space where parents and children are encouraged to read together in the mornings is available. The school has an impressive sensory room equipped with a range of resources, including lights and tactile materials, all tailored to meet the needs of the pupils.

Working with families

The school’s support for families is equally strong. Parents have access to guidance and support in areas such as eating, toileting, and social and emotional development. This holistic approach ensures that barriers to learning are addressed both in school and at home. The partnership between home and school is valued and developed, and staff go out of their way to create opportunities for parents to meet, share experiences and engage. The school website includes a “Parents” section under the Wellbeing tab. This has a list of support services for various issues such as Cost of Living Crisis (Newham Warm Havens and community grants) Domestic Violence and Abuse, Mental Health (Newham Talking Therapies and a crisis line) Housing and Rent Advice, SEND, Food banks, BSiL (Best Start in Life) Children’s Centres, and contact information for Parent Champions.

There is a strong sense of pride among staff, who speak warmly about the school. Comments such as “I think that this school is a wonderful place for children to be” and “we all started as student-teachers and we are still here” reflect both the positive culture and high levels of staff retention.
