Elmswell Community Primary School is a thriving and highly regarded school situated in a rural community in Suffolk. A strong culture of pride permeates the school, with pupils taking excellent care in their work and of their environment. The school promotes the “Golden Rules” – being kind, working hard, being gentle, and taking care of property. These are consistently referenced and reinforced.

From the moment pupils join the school, they benefit from effective early assessment processes that ensure needs are identified swiftly and accurately. This enables timely, well‑targeted support to be put in place, maximising progress and helping every pupil achieve their full potential.

The school implements the CUSP curriculum which features an evidence-based structure, supported by research-informed pedagogy. The CUSP framework supports personalisation by breaking down learning objectives into smaller steps, enabling teachers to fully integrate all pupils into shared learning at a level which is appropriate for them.

The curriculum includes a well‑structured reading spine that offers an impressive selection of literature exploring diversity, including ethnicity, disability and gender. Beyond the core texts, the school library provides a wide range of books, organised into areas of interest and recorded on a digital catalogue system.

Pupils can be observed confidently following well‑established routines and engaging well with their learning. Classrooms include helpful visual timetables, vocabulary and subject‑specific desk mats, and a ‘calm corner’ where pupils experiencing anxiety or similar emotions can take time out while remaining included in the learning environment.

The school benefits from two large indoor halls that facilitate clubs such as dance and drama as well as whole‑school assemblies, and a wide range of educational visits gives pupils opportunities to experience history, sports and the arts first‑hand.

Consistent support

The school has refined its own processes to create a blend of meetings, bespoke referrals, and information from the LA’s MHST (Mental Health Support Team) to inform the needs of pupils. They have created a system to more effectively share information, and staff have been supported in using these processes through focused training sessions. Evaluation processes have been strengthened and staff complete assessments for pupils promptly, enabling early intervention. The dedicated SENDCo contributes to all pupil progress meetings and offers guidance.

Over the course of the past year, the school has also continued to roll out and fully implement the Zones of Regulation. Training has been provided for new staff members, ensuring that the whole team remains confident and consistent in its approach. The strengthened use of the Zones of Regulation has also proved highly valuable in individual pupil discussions supporting clearer communication and more constructive collaboration.

Alongside this, the school has continued to develop its Inclusion Support processes. The SENDCo has actively supported staff in managing Inclusion Support Meetings (ISMs), helping to ensure that pupils’ needs are promptly identified and responded to.

Pupils speak confidently about their understanding of the Zones of Regulation. They describe how this framework helps them recognise and manage their emotions, enabling them to develop effective strategies to support their own wellbeing.

Whole‑school initiatives, including Anti‑Bullying Week, the PSHE curriculum, and the promotion of the Golden Rules, were addressed through assemblies and classroom practice. Mental Health Week, held on 12 February 2026, featured a whole‑school art display that welcomed parents into the school. Pupils also benefit from half-termly mental health meetings and forms that enable staff to gather parent feedback.

Additional whole‑school initiatives include an Internet Safety Day and sessions focusing on positive and negative aspects of AI. The Golden Rules continued to be promoted through assemblies and daily classroom routines.

Overall, Elmswell Community Primary School is a high‑performing, compassionate and inclusive school, where pupil progress is matched by a rich extra‑curricular offer.
