Carr Junior School is a highly inclusive 2 form-entry junior school. The school is part of a multi-academy trust (MAT) consisting of two secondary schools, one Alternative Provision (AP) and four primary schools. The newly appointed leadership team at Carr Junior School has been passionate about continuing to develop all aspects of the school and has taken a strategic approach to self-evaluation and improvement. The school should be proud of all its achievements and progress so far, with incredible enthusiasm and an open-minded attitude towards future goals and ideas. All staff positively embrace change and the opportunities available. Every member of the school community exhibits an unwavering commitment to inclusion.

Carr Junior School has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The school vision of “Aim High, Shine Bright” underpins everything and there is a caring and inclusive ethos permeating every aspect of school life. Leaders, staff, parents, carers and pupils are all united and support the inclusive culture.

Inclusion of all

Classroom environments and corridors are inviting yet low-sensory with beautiful use of natural materials and soothing music. Every area, alcove and space has been utilised to drive the pupil’s engagement and immersion in language, oracy and reading. High-quality resources are attractively displayed to inspire oracy and language development.

A language-rich environment highlights the importance placed upon reading, language acquisition and development, with opportunities to practise, rehearse, question and respond alongside high quality teaching of phonics. What is clear is the detailed knowledge and understanding staff have of every pupil to ensure that learning opportunities are maximised, which in turn enables all pupils to be engaged fully in their learning, achieve and succeed.

Across the school there is clear analysis of need, with appropriate support implemented as necessary. Leaders are exemplary in their approach to ensuring the needs of all pupils are met whether this be via curriculum and teaching adaptations, “keep up, not catch up” bespoke support, NEST and SPARKS and intervention, handwriting, and opportunities offered linked to the role of the Pastoral Team, who during discussions demonstrated a breadth and depth of knowledge, skills and understanding of the community which the school serves.

Transition processes are in place for pupils joining the school which work to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. The senior leadership team is proactive in signposting and providing support for families, and everyone works to ensure that children are settled and content.

Enriching Opportunities

The curriculum includes lessons which enable pupils to understand their place in the world, their differences and similarities and their responsibilities to others. There are six core themes of Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me, Character Development and British Values (resilience, democracy, the rule of law, and mutual respect). Careers guidance is also provided to raise aspirations and introduce pupils to careers and paths they may not have considered.

Carr Junior School is committed to enhancing and supporting Cultural Capital, developing the Carr 50 – a list of 50 essential experiences they wish for every pupil to have before leaving. This allows pupils to learn new skills and vocabulary in real life situations.

 

Leaders and staff ensure that the overarching Behaviour Policy, underpinned by five key components, collectively promote a consistent and supportive approach to behaviour across the school. Pupils are unanimous in their belief that Carr Junior is a “wonderfully welcoming school”. The pupils confirmed that they value the curriculum on offer and could speak with confidence around the subjects they enjoy; Reading; including the Library Bus and reading charts, White Rose Maths and Science, particularly the introduction of the KAPOW scheme as it has increased the number of experiments and investigations available per topic.

Success at Carr Junior is underpinned by strong, strategic leadership that places inclusion at the centre of all aspects of school life. Leaders have created a clear, ambitious vision, fully embraced by all. We are proud to award them Centre of Excellence status.
