Bolton Muslim Girls’ School is a multi-faith girls’ school serving a diverse, multicultural area of Bolton. The school is firmly embedded in its local community and works hard to support families amongst high levels of deprivation and economic disadvantages. The school has a high percentage of students in receipt of the Pupil Premium Grant. The senior leadership team has taken impressive steps towards increasing the number of pupils with EHCPs and SEND, showing a commitment to including all learners in the school community. Bolton Muslim Girls’ School integrates its proud identity as a Muslim faith school with a highly inclusive culture, accepting staff and pupils from a range of backgrounds.

The senior leadership team believe that the “ultimate goal of a school is to be inclusive” and there is a sense of determination that every young person should achieve the best possible academic results. There are high aspirations for all the young women who attend the school and students are encouraged to pursue professional careers and further education. All students progress into college, sixth-form or employment.

Bolton Muslim Girls’ School has successfully cultivated an atmosphere of mutual respect with girls socialising in a respectful and positive manner. The school feels relaxed and purposeful and learners are settled and ready to learn.

Inclusion values

Bolton Muslim Girls’ School has an ethos of being “guided by Islamic principles and British values” to promote “respect, integrity, and responsibility, creating a secure and inspiring space for every student.” This is promoted and echoed at every level of the school. There is a dedication to the progress and success of every student and there is a commitment to providing individual support to help every learner achieve their potential. The SENDCo ensures that this is delivered, for example helping students with mobility difficulties use AV1 robots. The rewards shop on Classcharts means that every student can be celebrated.

Considerable care is taken to ensure that all appropriate information is gathered from primary schools and families so that individual needs are effectively met on induction. Additional information and transition opportunities are provided for students with additional needs and their families.

Quality teaching

There has been significant financial investment in new buildings, and facilities with provision for Technology, Computing and Art. Bolton Muslim Girls’ school focuses proudly on the English Baccalaureate range of subjects (English, Maths, Science, Languages and Humanities) but also provides a notable and developing range of other subjects at GCSE level. Students are allocated time for extra-curricular activities within school hours, as many attend madrasah and so cannot attend after school hours. There is a wide range of activities, from ceramics to plumbing. There is careful thinking around the observation of Ramadan and Eid and how these will interact with the school day. This approach, balancing culture and faith needs with a robust curriculum, shows the school’s commitment to supporting every student.

Positive attitudes

Bolton Muslim Girls’ School has worked hard to create a positive and nurturing environment for learning. The attitudes to learning are incredibly positive. Common language is used so that expectations are clear and understood across the school. This is used as a framework to support learning rather than a way to restrain pupils, and staff can use requirements flexibly for students who have additional needs or are struggling. This balance between consistent standards and sympathetic support is strongly characteristic of an inclusive school.

Mental health support is a significant priority for Bolton Muslim Girls’ School. There is a group of forty “Be Kind to My Mind.” ambassadors across the school, usually at least one for each form group. This group was well trained through the “Be Kind to My Mind” programme running across Bolton and described themselves as a “bridge between students and teachers.”

The way in which the school enables the students to achieve outstanding results regardless of economic or academic disadvantage is exceptionally inclusive.
