Beechwood Primary School has a clear ethos which pervades all aspects of school life, creating a welcoming, inclusive, and values-driven community where people genuinely matter. The Headteacher, alongside other senior staff, provides an excellent example, living and modelling the ethos to all members of the school community. She is highly visible and available to everybody, and knows every child, family, and adult well.

Good examples of this ethos can be seen in the way that rooms are allocated to cohorts, teachers are allocated to their classes, the way in which the curriculum has been developed and organised and the pedagogy that has been developed for teaching in all areas of the curriculum.

The school has clear and consistent principles which are followed enthusiastically by all staff. Value and respect for the individual is evident and teachers are flexible, offering adaptive teaching. The result is a practice with firm and well-informed foundations, which also incorporates sympathetic flexibility to meet the needs of every pupil.

The curriculum is well planned and has been reviewed and slimmed down to meet the needs of pupils. Schemes of work have been reviewed to ensure a focus on the retention of key knowledge and reduce cognitive overload. The learning environment is kept under review and is designed around the needs of learners. For example, more space has been allocated to one year group, reflecting the physical and emotional needs of this cohort.  Resources are readily available to support all learners and groups.

Behaviour throughout the school is calm and respectful. There is a high premium placed on helping one another and this can be seen most clearly during unstructured times, when older pupils take their roles as buddies extremely seriously.

Links with the community

There are strong links with the wider community, and these add great benefits to learners in terms of inclusion. Resources in school are carefully considered to reflect the diversity of the global population. An innovative approach is used, whereby protected characteristics are explicitly taught and then indicated throughout curriculum materials, displays, and resources using symbols.

Education about what it means to be part of a community starts with learning about the school’s ethos: “Think for yourself, Care for others.” Pupils really take this to heart and show great levels of respect and care for each other. They are encouraged to take part in team building and caring activities, and the school has established itself as a well-regarded hub in the local community.

Beechwood Primary School engages the local community in a variety of ways. Pupils have been involved in raising money for local charities, taking donations to the local foodbank as part of harvest festival celebrations and taking part in Remembrance Parades and the Christmas Light celebrations. The Forest School area is frequently used as a community resource and is available to outside groups.

Picture News is regularly used for assemblies, encouraging pupils to know what is going on in the wider world. Theme days within the curriculum are used to enhance understanding of different cultures and beliefs. A recent ‘languages day’ saw pupils learning about Côte d’Ivoire rather than viewing France as the only French-speaking country.

The Arts have a high profile within the curriculum, developing pupils’ confidence and helping them engage with the community. The Headteacher is one of the organisers of the Halton Primary Arts Network, which organises events such as ‘Halton Sings’ at the Brindley Hall and an Art exhibition in the local shopping centre. These events bolster community spirit and help the whole community to engage in encounters with other cultures and beliefs.

Beechwood Primary School offers a warm, inclusive, and thoughtfully led learning environment where individuals are known, valued, and supported.
