Aurora Meldreth Manor is a school with a powerful and warm ethos of inclusion and wellbeing. Staff should be proud of the considerable progress they have made in developing inclusive practice and communication across the school. They have been particularly focused on supporting non-verbal learners and pupils with additional communication needs such as those with ASD and PMLD. The school has a commendably thoughtful and practical approach and combines staff training and specialist support to great effect to ensure that communication is supported for all pupils, regardless of how this looks.

Approaches and support are embedded into daily routines and interwoven into all parts of the school day including classrooms, corridors, and shared spaces. This benefits the entire school community. There is a consistent focus on and commitment to student wellbeing and voice. Opportunities to share opinions, make choices and reflect on their own learning are carefully embedded across the curriculum. The school council ensures engagement, accountability and meaningful participation.

Chances to get involved

Displays throughout the school show the school’s pride in its learners. THRIVE boards, Healthy Living Boards, targets, communication passports and weekly plans are all on display, ensuring transparency and celebrating the achievements of students, as well as providing insight into the learning process to students and families. There are student art galleries which allow students to show off their work and reinforce their confidence and development.

The Tuck Shop offers an opportunity to gain practical life skills such as queuing, taking turns and working in a shop, involving handling money and presentation. There is also a washing machine and dryer, and gardening beds on campus which pupils learn to use, helping develop their independence and confidence in daily living and promoting responsibility and engagement.

Aurora Meldreth Manor has developed a sensory circuit to support learners to regulate and begin the day calmly and ready to learn – the exact activities participated in are individual to the learner and pupils are able to choose what they need to regulate and understand why they are accessing certain points on the circuit.

Working on worth

Aurora Meldreth Manor has had a special focus on increasing self-worth and confidence in learners. THRIVE underpins this and runs through the whole school. Themes and weekly sessions are held supporting emotional development, resilience and understanding behaviour. THRIVE is embedded into every element of the school day and is referenced enthusiastically by pupils and staff. There is a wonderful promotion of wellbeing for staff and learners.

Parents and community

Parents are extremely positive and enthusiastic about Aurora Meldreth Manor School and the impact it has on their children. They say that the relationship between staff and the parents and carers is extremely close and learners are engaged and love attending. The school is impressively outward looking and promotes strong links to other schools and the local community. Enrichment opportunities such as visits to places of worship, volunteering and experiential learning are very popular and further promote communication, independence and community engagement.
