Tidemill Academy in Lewisham has been assessed for and achieved Centre of Excellence status.
Background
Tidemill Academy is a non-faith primary school located in New Cross, South East London, close to the busy and diverse Deptford High Street.
The school has a very good reputation both within and beyond the local community consequently the school is often over-subscribed, particularly with children who fall into the SEN category. Mobility has previously been an issue but is currently stable with most classes full (453, July 2017).
Context
The social and economic background of the majority of the pupils is very low. This is reflected in the high levels of PPG children and high proportion of children in single-parent families (at least 32%, Oct 2015). Over 40 languages are spoken in the school and 53% of children have English as an additional language.
Headteacher Leads by Example
The Headteacher leads by example with integrity, creativity, resilience and clarity of purpose. Her leadership has a positive impact on all areas of the school. She demonstrates optimistic personal behaviour, positive relationships and attitudes to students, staff, parents, governors and members of the local community.
Strong Inclusive Values
As a result of the combination of robust teaching and learning strategies, strong inclusive values, a thorough tracking system and positive and effective behaviour systems, the progress of pupils, from low starting points is above national average with pupil premium students making excellent progress.
Inclusion is Integral
Inclusion is an integral part of school life. This was evident in every conversation, without exception. Relationships are positive and built upon mutual trust and respect. The SENCO is an exceptional leader with a passion for inclusion and the determination to get the very best support for the children in her care and their families.
Every Child Matters
Staff are committed to ensure that every child matters. Children take huge pride in their achievements and in their school. The school values the individual and promotes high self-esteem encouraging a ‘can do’ culture which is central to its ethos.
A Pleasing Environment
The environment is bright and positive with interesting and informative displays in corridors and classrooms.
Challenging Learning Experiences
All children are provided with challenging learning experiences in order to fulfill their individual potential in all areas. The Headteacher, her leadership team, staff, governors, children, parents and local community members are totally committed to the inclusive nature of the school, and staff, parents and children are proud of their school.
Children Speak Highly of Their School
Children are polite, friendly, self-confident and enthusiastic. They behave very well around the school, in their lessons and in the playground. They speak very highly of their school and its staff, for whom they have great respect and they know that they are listened to and cared for.
An Open-Door Policy
There is an open-door policy, which encourages children and parents to seek support, with the result that needs are understood and everyone works hard as a team, to achieve the best possible outcomes for children and their families.
Meeting Children’s Individual Needs
Teaching and support staff work closely together and plan carefully to meet their children’s individual needs. Staff are positive, energetic and fully committed to the children and to the school. They love the family atmosphere in the school where all staff know all the children.
