GEMS World Academy Dubai has achieved IQM International Centre of Excellence status, recognising the strength of its inclusive culture and the growing institutional maturity underpinning its approach to inclusion, teaching, wellbeing and learner development.

Time spent across both campuses of GEMS World Academy Dubai leaves little doubt that this is a school working deliberately to ensure inclusion becomes part of the daily lived experience of students rather than simply a strategic aspiration or specialist provision. The Academy has consciously chosen not to narrow its learner profile in pursuit of league table positioning or selective prestige. Instead, leaders have invested heavily in systems, staffing structures and professional development capable of sustaining an inclusive model within a rigorous all-through IB continuum environment.

The quality of inclusion within mainstream classroom life emerged repeatedly as a major strength throughout the visit. Observations across both Primary and Secondary phases demonstrated that adaptive teaching is understood as part of high-quality teaching itself rather than a separate intervention model reserved solely for identified learners. Teachers adjusted explanations, scaffolding, questioning and levels of support naturally whilst maintaining ambitious expectations for engagement and progress. Students receiving additional support remained connected meaningfully to classroom discussion, peer interaction and wider learning experiences.

Leadership with clarity and purpose

Leadership across GEMS World Academy Dubai is a major strength of the school and reflects an organisation operating with clarity, alignment and strong moral purpose. Senior leaders, middle leaders, counsellors, instructional coaches and inclusion staff spoke with notable coherence regarding the Academy’s expectations for learner support. The assessment team left with strong confidence that leaders possess both the professional credibility and self-awareness necessary to sustain long term improvement.

The professional culture developing across the school is another significant strength. Coaching, reflection and instructional development appear embedded within everyday practice. The influence of the school’s professional learning and instructional coaching culture is evident within this work. The implementation of Teach Like a GEM principles, targeted CPD and collaborative planning structures has helped establish greater consistency in classroom expectations and inclusive pedagogy across phases.

A curriculum that broadens opportunity

The curriculum at GEMS World Academy Dubai reflects a school that has thought carefully about how ambitious international education can remain both inclusive and accessible to a highly diverse learner community. Across both campuses, the IQM assessment team encountered a curriculum designed around academic performance, participation, inquiry, learner confidence and long-term progression. The Academy’s IB continuum provides strong coherence across phases whilst allowing flexibility for students with differing strengths, needs and aspirations.

The breadth of pathways available across the Academy is another major strength. The development of Alternative Pathways and vocational opportunities highlights thoughtful curriculum leadership and a willingness to evolve provision in response to learner need. Entrepreneurship and innovation contribute strongly to curriculum engagement across the school. As the GEMS Centre of Excellence for Entrepreneurship, Enterprise and Social Impact, the Academy has developed significant opportunities for students to engage with coding, robotics, design thinking and real-world problem-solving.

Wellbeing, belonging and personal development

Behaviour and personal development across GEMS World Academy Dubai reflect a school where relationships, emotional safety and learner well-being are taken seriously by both staff and students. One of the strongest impressions left by the assessment was the maturity and self awareness demonstrated by students across multiple phases of the school. The quality of emotional support available to students was particularly impressive.

The wider emotional climate across the school also deserves recognition. Large international schools can sometimes feel polished yet transactional, but GWA largely avoids this. Across both campuses, the atmosphere felt settled, supportive and emotionally secure. Students contributed confidently, interacted comfortably with adults and took academic risks without fear of embarrassment.

The strongest aspects of the school’s inclusive culture were not confined to SEND provision or intervention pathways alone. Inclusion was evident in the dignity afforded to students, the emotional safety within classrooms, the warmth of staff interactions and the extent to which learners were integrated within the wider life of the community.

Growing institutional maturity

What distinguishes GEMS World Academy Dubai most clearly is not simply the quality of provision itself, but the growing institutional self-awareness underpinning it.
