The King’s Hospital School has achieved the Inclusive School Award with Centre of Excellence status.
Embraces Cultural and Diversity Changes
The King’s Hospital School is a prestigious, co-educational, fee paying, voluntary secondary school located on an 80-acre site close to Dublin, Ireland. The school has an extensive history within the community and celebrated its 350th year in 2019. It is a unique school in that it is a boarding and day school, under the patronage of The Archbishop of Dublin and Glendalough, but it is also a Church of Ireland Parish. Each year, the school welcomes approximately 400 Day Students and 300 Boarders (including approximately 130 international students). A significant number of students receive financial assistance through the Secondary Education Committee (SEC) grant system, or other charitable bursaries.

As a fee-paying school with boarding facilities, there is a full-time community of students, teachers, support staff and their families living on site. Originally, the school was established as a charitable school to look after the disadvantaged young boys of Dublin. In the 1960s, it amalgamated with two other schools and became coeducational. The Leaders explained that “the school has adapted to, and overcome, many societal changes during its

long history”. Currently, the school embraces cultural and diversity changes and welcomes students and staff of different (or no) faiths, from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Through a combination of holistic education, proactive inclusion efforts and a nurturing Christian ethos, the school has created an environment where students flourish academically, socially and emotionally.
From when the Assessor set foot in the school, they were enveloped in an atmosphere of Irish hospitality, warmly welcomed and made to feel an integral part of the community. This sentiment is echoed by visitors and newcomers who attest to the inclusive nature of the school’s environment.

The true essence of the school’s inclusive culture is epitomised by the conduct, interactions and confidence displayed by its students. Moreover, the school’s impressive work on inclusion and diversity reflects a forward-thinking approach that continually evolves to meet the needs of its students. The integration of a global dimension enriches the educational experience, encouraging broader perspectives and widening horizons.
Central to the school’s ethos is a strong foundation of care and compassion, exemplified by the impactful presence of the Chaplain. This Christian ethos permeates throughout the school, providing an additional layer of support and guidance for students.
Furthermore, the positive behaviour and relationships observed within the school community reflect a culture of mutual respect, where every individual feels validated and listened to. The praise culture, exemplified in the celebrations observed during morning chapel, reinforces positivity and encouragement among students and staff alike.
The school’s commitment to wellbeing is commendable, with a range of support services including on-site therapists, nurses, a doctor and a general approach from staff that prioritises the holistic wellness of students. The Leadership Team, led by the Headmaster and Deputies, leads with the heart, promoting a culture of empathy and support. Reflective practice, including self-evaluation and team-teaching, demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement and growth.
The school’s proactive approach to addressing bullying is praiseworthy, with transparent processes and proactive responses that ensure students feel well-supported. Additionally, the school’s digitalisation plans demonstrate an innovative approach to enhancing educational practices, leveraging technology to further support inclusive initiatives.

The tangible outcomes of the school’s inclusive approach are evident in various facets of school life. Academic success, holistic development and a strong sense of community cohesion are among the outstanding outcomes.
