This week we welcomed schools catering for the youngest of pupils right through to those students preparing for their final days at school.
Strong Commitment to Inclusive Practice
First up we have Sirius Academy West in Hull which achieved the Inclusive School Award with Flagship status. The school demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive practice. Our Assessor noted, “Sirius Academy West has been on a journey to develop its inclusive practice and it is clear, both from this visit and from prior documentation made available, that it has been a determined and vigorous one.”

Rainbow Rewards
Next up we welcome the little faces from Stanley Park Infants’ School, Carshalton in Surrey. The school achieved the Inclusive School Award with Centre of Excellence status.
Our Assesor highlighted the very cute, but also very important concept of ‘Rainbow Rewards’. They explained, “Pupils speak confidently about their school. They confidently shared their school charter – ‘Be kind, be helpful, be the best you can be!’ and explained how they are all different with varying strengths and challenges. When asked about ‘Rainbow Rewards’ the children explained that ‘Rainbow Rewards’ are given when they do something good – and not necessarily just good work.
“The rewards can be given for having good ideas, helping another child, working independently, listening well in class, and doing fantastic walking.”

Happy Individuals
Also securing Centre of Excellence status this week was St Edward’s RC Primary School in Upton Park. The London school gave our Assessor a very warm welcome. They concluded, “It was a pleasure to meet the Inclusion Lead and her team and witness their passion and drive to ensure all pupils, regardless of their starting point, have the opportunity to reach their potential. It was also a pleasure to meet a representative of pupils who appear as happy individuals with a clear voice. There has evidently been a positive journey in the aim of the school to improve its inclusivity over the last few years.”

Welcoming and Safe
Making it a trio for Centre of Excellence awards this week was Ashwood Spencer Academy in Derby. Our Assessor explained, “The academy provides a welcoming and safe environment that has been purposefully and deliberately thought out to best meet the needs of all pupils, creating a nurturing supportive feel. Pupils recognise this and appreciate it with one pupil commenting that they liked school because ‘it is full of beautiful things’.”
They concluded, “A lot of change has occurred over the last few years which now needs time to embed so that the lagging indicator of academic results can be allowed to reflect the high-quality provision that is now in place. That these changes have occurred during the Covid pandemic is testament to the commitment of leaders and staff at all levels.”
