Congratulations to Wyvil Primary School and its Resource Bases for Speech, Language and Communication Needs, and Autism on retaining the IQM Inclusive School Award. This wonderful achievement celebrates the dedication of pupils, staff, families and partners in creating a welcoming community where every child is valued, supported and empowered to thrive.
Inclusion Drives Belonging
Wyvil Primary School continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to inclusion, underpinned by a culture where pupils, staff and families are valued and supported. Stakeholders consistently described a school where belonging, acceptance and high expectations are evident in daily practice. Inclusion is not viewed as an additional initiative but rather as a central principle that informs leadership decisions, curriculum design, pastoral support and relationships across the school community.
Progress Through Partnership
Leaders have maintained a clear focus on ensuring that provision meets the needs of a diverse pupil population. Systems for identifying need and monitoring progress are well established, with staff, parents and leaders contributing to regular discussions through half-termly pupil progress meetings. As one leader explained, progress is “discussed with teachers, parents and other leaders through pupil progress meetings every half term.” This collaborative approach reflects a school that seeks to remove barriers to learning and respond quickly when concerns emerge.
Wellbeing Builds Independence
A significant strength of the school lies in its work to support emotional wellbeing and personal development. Zones of Regulation is embedded across specialist provision and calming spaces are available within classrooms. Staff described how pupils are taught to recognise emotions, understand triggers and develop strategies for self-regulation. One practitioner explained, “we teach children about understanding the Zones of Regulation” and “we teach them how they should respond to this.” Evidence suggests that pupils are becoming increasingly independent in managing their emotions.
Pupils Feel Connected
Pupil voice was overwhelmingly positive. Pupils spoke warmly about their experiences within school and specialist provision. They described enjoying learning, feeling safe and making friends. One pupil explained, “I like coming here because I get to learn,” while another reflected, “I get to see good things and make new friends.”
Families Feel Supported
Parents were highly complimentary about the school’s support for children and families. Communication was consistently identified as a strength. Families reported feeling involved in decision-making and valued the accessibility of staff. Several parents spoke about the difference the school had made to their children, particularly those with additional needs. One parent reported that “my child is thriving now,” while another commented that “the best thing is the family feeling.” Such comments were echoed by the Family Support Worker, whose highly visible role contributes significantly to the school’s inclusive culture.
