It’s been a busy week here at IQM as we celebrate five more schools joining our inclusion family. In recent days we have been joined by William Harding School, by St Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary School, by Castlefort Junior Mixed and Infant School, Forelands Field School and The Hyde School.
Worked Hard to Create Inclusive Environment
St Cyprian’s Greek Orthodox Primary Academy was the first of our schools to achieve the prestigious Flagship status this week. Our Assessor explained, “The Academy has worked hard to create an inclusive environment including building community links to ensure families know where to get support and who to talk to. ”
And they were in no doubt about the warm welcome that awaits at the Thornton Heath school. Our Assessor explained, “When you arrive at St Cyprian’s Primary Academy you are instantly welcomed by the friendly faces in reception and this friendliness was seen throughout the Academy.”
Concluding the Assessor added, “The children were enthusiastic about their learning and were proud of everything their Academy has achieved.”

Inclusion Will Always Be a Prime Focus
Joining our Flagship schools this week was The Hyde School. Our Assessor found confident, happy children who were eager to speak about their school.
They noted, “The staff know the pupils well, respond to pupil need and adapt work to allow pupil access. Staff build strong relationships with the parents as it is recognised that they need them on side in order to make the most of the work they are doing with the children. Parents recognise that staff do reach out to make connection with them.”
Concluding our Assessor had high praise for the Barnet school, saying, “Inclusion is without a doubt integral to all that the school does and as such can appear to be just part of the normal working day. However, with the continued focus on the pupils’ needs and what should be done best to address them, there is no question that inclusion will always be a prime focus. “

At The Heart of Everything
William Harding was the first of our schools to secure Centre of Excellence status this week. During our Assessor’s tour of the school, they noted it was a real strength to see the same displays in all rooms that were all about learning. The school motto, Aim High, Work Hard. Be Kind … and the school values of Inclusion, Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance, Honesty and Collaboration, are all highlighted in rooms in an age -appropriate way.
Staff our Assessor spoke to felt that the work they do is normal, but the Assessor said it is evident they go over and beyond what is needed.
Impressed with the dedication evident in the Aylesbury school our Assessor added, “The Headteacher and her team should be congratulated on what they have achieved; the needs of the pupils and their families are at the heart of everything.”

Consistently Expanding its Inclusive Practice
Also securing Centre of Excellence status is Foreland Fields School. Our Assessor noted that Foreland Fields is a school which is consistently expanding its inclusive practice.
Highlighting the Ramsgate school’s efforts our Assessor added, “The School Harvest Assembly was a model example of inclusion in practice. Students from the satellite attended and participated in the actual assembly in the hall utilising the range of communication skills pupils in the School have.”
‘It’s OK to Get Things Wrong’
Finally this week we welcome the little folk from Castlefort Junior Mixed and Infant School. The smiles on the faces of the pupils reflect the happy welcoming facility which achieved the Inclusive School Award.
Highlighting how the Walsall school made sure children feel secure our Assessor explained, “Pupils enjoy school and feel safe because of the inclusive culture that exists.
“They know that it is ok to get things wrong because FAIL stands for ‘First Attempt at Learning.’ They know that they can share worries and they will be listened to by using their worry monsters to place concerns inside and zip up. They enjoy their playground as there is lots to do and there are many various activities to explore due to the size and high-quality facilities available.”
