St Anthony’s Primary School Achieves IQM Centre of Excellence Status

St Anthony’s Primary School has achieved IQM Inclusive School Award with Centre of Excellence status in recognition of its outstanding inclusive provision, unwavering commitment to its community and its determination to ensure that every child is recognised, valued and supported to succeed. The assessment found a school where inclusion is woven through every aspect of school life and where the motto ‘To Learn, To Live, To Love’ is evident in the experiences of pupils, families and staff alike.  

“We Are All Different and That’s What Makes the World Light, Bright and Beautiful” 

A Year 3 pupil perhaps captured the spirit of St Anthony’s best when they explained: 

“We are all different and that’s what makes the world light, bright and beautiful.” 

The school serves a diverse community and has become expert in embracing difference and ensuring equality of opportunity. A recent journey towards becoming a recognised School of Sanctuary helped strengthen the understanding that inclusion is about much more than special educational needs. What was particularly evident throughout the assessment was that pupils are exposed to such a wide variety of cultures, religions and additional needs that they are accepting, welcoming and friendly to all. 

A School That Feels Like Family 

Despite having almost 700 pupils on roll, St Anthony’s retains a small-school feel. 

Staff, parents and pupils consistently described the school as a “family” and spoke about its importance within the local community. There is a genuine belief that the school can help all pupils achieve their very best, regardless of starting point, background or additional needs. Parents spoke very highly of the open channels of communication, noting that they see school leaders every day and always feel listened to and respected. 

One parent described their child’s journey through the school as: “A remarkable experience.” 

Going Above and Beyond for Children and Families 

A major strength of St Anthony’s is its commitment to supporting families as well as pupils. The school works with charities and community organisations to provide practical support including food hampers, vouchers, toys and winter clothing. External partners spoke highly of the way the school works respectfully with families while maintaining dignity and confidentiality. 

The assessment noted that school leaders themselves reflected that they often “undersell” the work they do in this area, with one leader commenting: 

“We do things all year that other schools don’t.” 

Inclusion That Meets Every Need 

St Anthony’s has been innovative in developing provision that meets the needs of a diverse pupil population. 

The school has two Learning Support classes for pupils with Moderate Learning Difficulties, two classes for pupils with autism and a nurture provision known as the Sunshine Class. A key principle is that inclusion is never about placing pupils in settings for the sake of it. Instead, staff carefully consider how best to ensure every pupil has the environment and opportunities they need to thrive. 

Creating Good People 

Throughout the assessment there was a clear understanding that education at St Anthony’s extends beyond academic achievement. The curriculum supports pupils to think critically, celebrate diversity and understand the perspectives of others. Learning opportunities range from exploring significant figures such as Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa to discussing complex issues through literature and topic work. 

One Vice Principal explained the school’s philosophy powerfully: 

“We are creating good people … it’s about what we put in here (heart), it sticks.” 

Pupil Voice and Leadership 

Pupils play a meaningful role in shaping school life. 

School Council members and ambassadors spoke proudly about representing their peers and influencing decisions. The Chair of Governors explained that he wants pupils to feel that this is: “Their school.” One pupil perfectly summed up the purpose of these leadership opportunities when they said: “I’m a creative person and can get ideas that help make the school better.” 

A Community at the Heart of Everything 

The school’s links with the local community are extensive and impactful. 

Shared Education partnerships, strong relationships with external agencies, close collaboration with post-primary schools and support from community organisations all contribute to the school’s inclusive culture. A Family Intervention Team member described St Anthony’s as: “A wonderful example of how agencies work together. The positive relationship ensures that children and families receive consistent support.” 

The assessment also highlighted the school’s determination to ensure that every pupil can access trips, events and enrichment opportunities, with support and adaptations put in place wherever required.
