Redwood Primary School has achieved the IQM Inclusive School Award in recognition of its commitment to inclusion, belonging and ensuring that every pupil can thrive. The assessment highlighted a school where everyone is valued, wanted and included, with children placed at the heart of every decision and a culture built around the motto, Together we SHINE. 

A School Where Everyone Matters 

“Together we SHINE” is embedded in the school’s culture: Show respect in everything we say and do; Hardworking and ready to learn; Independent and can work as a team; Not afraid to make mistakes; Everyone matters. 

The assessor found that Redwood fully embraces its motto in everything that they do. Staff are described as effective role models who work closely together as a united team and demonstrate mutual respect with their children and families. 

As the Headteacher explained: 

“All staff are fully committed to providing high-quality teaching and learning, backed by excellent pastoral care and support for all. We are passionate about recognising the individual talents of all of the children in our care, to ensure that opportunities are provided so that all can reach their full potential. The happiness, well-being, and success of every child are our top priorities.”

Inclusion Through Care and Opportunity 

Staff work tirelessly to ensure that “no one is left behind so that they can reach their potential,” with specialist provision carefully designed to support pupils with a wide range of needs. The Nest provides nurture and pastoral support, while The Orchard supports highly complex pupils who are pre-verbal or non-verbal. 

Children are supported to feel safe, secure and ready to learn. The school provides free breakfast each morning, helping children begin the day positively. 

The assessor noted that every learning environment across the school is calm, purposeful and organised, enabling children to learn in a safe family-friendly environment where they can flourish and thrive. 

A Curriculum That Broadens Horizons 

Redwood’s curriculum is underpinned by a clear set of principles and attributes that leaders want every child to develop before moving on to secondary school. 

The curriculum enables children to become literate and numerate, aspirational, happy and healthy, resilient and reflective, aware, creative, responsible, knowledgeable and skilful. 

Alongside the formal curriculum, pupils benefit from a rich programme of experiences. The school’s “passport” of activities includes singing, sport, playing musical instruments, visiting museums and galleries, attending theatre performances and exploring local parks. 

Strong Partnerships with Families and the Community 

Annual parental surveys consistently show that over 99% of parents feel their child is happy and safe at Redwood, while over 98% would recommend the school to another parent. 

One parent commented: 

“When I have had an issue for the school to sort out, it was all done and dusted within a few days, the SENCo is epic!!” 

The school is deeply connected to its community and is working closely with local partners to provide practical support to families. The Nest pastoral team is well established and highly valued, offering advice, guidance and support to families whenever needed. 

As the Headteacher explained: 

“It is lovely to see so many people come into school and share smiles, laughter and a sense of belonging.” 

Leadership That Inspires 

The assessor praised the leadership at all levels of the school, noting that leaders, governors and staff work together to ensure Redwood continues to flourish. 

Leadership is distributed across the school, with staff empowered to develop professionally and take on new responsibilities. This culture has created a highly committed workforce. 

This school and all of its staff work tirelessly to empower each child to be the best that they can be, both personally and academically, as they achieve their aspirations.
