Prince Henry’s High School Achieves IQM Flagship Status

Prince Henry’s High School has achieved IQM Flagship Status in recognition of its sustained commitment to inclusion, equality and ensuring every student can access a high-quality education and fully participate in school life. The assessment highlighted a school where inclusion remains central to the ethos and values, with leaders, staff and students working together to create a culture where everyone feels accepted, supported and able to thrive. 

A Culture of Equity and Belonging 

The school consistently promotes equality, diversity and respect, creating an environment where students feel accepted and supported, with school ambassadors helping to drive agendas across the school. 

The Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Group plays a key role in promoting a culture of respect, belonging and inclusion across the school community. The group involves both staff and students working collaboratively to raise awareness of equality issues, celebrate diversity and ensure that all members of the school community feel represented and valued. 

This year, students led assemblies around PRIDE and created PRIDE flag signing events, promoting solidarity and allyship, supporting the student body to challenge discriminatory language or behaviour, support classmates who may be feeling marginalised and promote respect for different cultures, identities, beliefs and backgrounds. 

Removing Barriers to Learning 

Effective pastoral systems are fully embedded and continually reviewed, ensuring ongoing targeted support is provided as needed for vulnerable students through The Lodge, Bridge House and Hopkins House. 

Hopkins House has been developed as a calm working space to support pupils who have barriers to coping in mainstream provision. Developed in response to a growing need to support students with anxiety who are in danger of becoming school refusers, the environment provides access to separate workstations equipped with computers alongside comfortable seating, enabling students to take breaks from learning to refocus as needed. 

Hopkins House has had a positive impact on school attendance, with school figures now 1.7% above DfE national attendance. 

Specialist Provision That Changes Lives 

The Lodge continues to provide school places for students who, without the base, would be in Alternative Provision or permanently excluded from mainstream education. The Lodge is able to support students requiring significant nurturing alongside supporting those with behavioural issues. 

The recently opened Farmhouse provision provides an alternative outdoor learning space, offering opportunities for talk alongside creative outdoor activities linked to trauma-informed practice in a relaxed environment. 

Student Leadership in Action 

Student leadership is a particularly well-developed aspect of school life. Through the Sixth Form Ambassador Programme, students support school events, mentor younger pupils and represent the school to visitors and prospective families. Ambassador training includes safeguarding, leadership and values training, enabling ambassadors to become role models across the school. Ambassadors are successfully used as Year 9 Reading Buddies, helping to develop literacy and reading skills alongside supporting younger students with organisation and transition into high school. The Head Students and ambassadors play a key role in promoting student voice and working alongside senior leaders. These opportunities enable students to develop leadership, communication and organisational skills while making a meaningful contribution to the school. Students are regularly consulted about the school values and this year students requested two additional values: Equity and Dignity, following the work completed around Equality, Diversity and Inclusion. 

Opportunity Beyond the Classroom 

Leaders continue to see enrichment provision and extra-curricular experiences as a key priority for all students. The extra-curricular programme available across the school is vast, with student participation carefully tracked. Currently around 90% to 95% of students participate in at least one enrichment activity. 

Tea Parties continue to provide an important element of the student reward and recognition system. Head Students join senior leaders at termly events celebrating students’ attitudes, behaviour, attendance, engagement in lessons and participation in extra-curricular activities. 

The school continues to receive recognition for the quality of its provision, including confirmation of the Gold Artsmark Award, renewal of the Sports Mark Platinum Award and achievement of the Strategic Safeguarding Award.
