Penketh High School Achieves IQM Inclusive School Award

Penketh High School has achieved the IQM Inclusive School Award in recognition of its commitment to ensuring that every pupil, regardless of background, starting point or circumstance, feels that they belong and can be successful. The assessment highlighted a school where inclusion feels natural rather than strategic and where relationships are at the heart of daily life. 

No Glass Ceilings on Achievement 

The school’s vision is clearly understood across the community and is underpinned by the values of being Ready, Respectful and Safe. These values are not simply displayed around the building; they are evident in the language used by staff, the relationships between pupils and adults, and the consistently high aspirations that exist for every pupil. 

A theme that emerged repeatedly during the review was the school’s determination to remove barriers whilst maintaining ambition. Staff spoke passionately about having “no glass ceilings on achievement” and ensuring that pupils are not defined by need, circumstance or starting point. This commitment is evident throughout the school’s provision, from the extensive support available through the Inclusion Base and Pupil Achievement Centre to the personalised pathways available for pupils requiring additional support. 

Opportunity for Every Pupil 

The curriculum at Penketh High School is about far more than qualifications. What stands out most is the school’s determination to ensure that opportunity is available to everyone. Staff spoke passionately about creating experiences that help pupils understand the wider world and their place within it. 

The school’s Dual Curriculum is a particularly powerful feature of its inclusive approach. Running alongside the academic curriculum, it provides opportunities for pupils to develop confidence, teamwork, resilience, leadership and employability skills. 

Significantly, enrichment is timetabled within the school day, ensuring that all pupils can participate regardless of additional responsibilities, transport arrangements or financial circumstances. 

Personal Development as a Strength 

Throughout the review, there was a strong sense that the school is committed to developing confident, resilient and well-rounded young people who are prepared for life beyond the school gates. The extensive programme of experiential learning, careers education and enrichment enable pupils to experience opportunities they may not otherwise encounter. From university visits and employer encounters to volunteering opportunities, cultural experiences and community projects, pupils are encouraged to think ambitiously about their futures. One member of staff described the school’s commitment to providing “positive experiences, life chances and aspirations.” 

Working in Partnership with Families 

Families spoke warmly about the relationships they have developed with staff and the confidence they have in raising concerns or asking for support when needed. Transition arrangements are particularly strong and provide families with reassurance during what can often be an anxious time. Parents spoke positively about Summer School, induction activities and the wealth of information available as pupils move from primary to secondary education. Families spoke highly of the care, understanding and commitment shown by staff. They feel welcomed, respected and confident that their views are heard. 

Broadening Horizons Beyond the Classroom 

Penketh High School has developed an impressive range of local, national and increasingly global partnerships which enrich the lives of pupils and strengthen the school’s inclusive ethos. A significant strength of the school is its determination to broaden horizons and remove barriers to opportunity. Throughout the review, staff spoke passionately about ensuring that pupils experience places, careers, cultures and communities that they may not otherwise encounter. 

Pupils access a variety of experiences which help prepare them for adulthood and develop independence, including volunteering opportunities, links with Warrington Youth Zone and work experience placements such as those available through Knowsley Safari Park. What emerges most strongly is a school that refuses to allow circumstance to limit opportunity.
