Park Lane School has achieved IQM Inclusive School Award with Centre of Excellence status in recognition of its outstanding inclusive practice, transformational work with pupils and families, and its commitment to ensuring that every individual is seen, heard and valued. The assessment found an exceptional school community where inclusion is not simply an aspiration but a lived reality, creating meaningful opportunities for pupils, staff and families to thrive. 

A School Where Everybody Belongs 

Several stakeholder comments captured the essence of Park Lane School: “The school with a great vibe!” (Lord’s Taverners) “Giving hope and brighter futures than were conceivable before my child attended this school.” (Parent) “Everybody belongs… teachers are caring… they respect you and help you when you’re down.” (Student) 

The inclusive community at Park Lane is one that is felt before it is described. It is experienced in the everyday interactions between pupils and staff, in the trust built between families and professionals, and in the sense that every individual is valued and supported to be the very best version of themselves. 

Transforming Lives Through Inclusion 

For many pupils, Park Lane represents a fresh start. Many arrive from other settings where they have experienced exclusion, misunderstanding or a sense of failure. In contrast, pupils consistently describe feeling more confident, respected and understood. 

The assessment noted that pupils speak openly about their futures, including employment, independence and relationships. They are developing not only confidence in themselves but also a growing sense of identity and agency. Crucially, inclusion is mutual. Pupils actively support one another and understand the importance of helping peers who may be struggling, creating a culture where belonging is embedded throughout the school community. 

Communication at the Heart of Learning 

A defining strength of Park Lane School is its commitment to communication. A consistent total communication approach ensures that all pupils can access learning and express themselves. During lesson visits, pupils were observed independently using AAC devices, symbols and speech interchangeably, while staff seamlessly modelled these approaches throughout learning. This communication-rich environment ensures that inclusion is not dependent upon verbal ability but is actively enabled through skilled and responsive teaching. The assessment team noted that pupils engage in meaningful learning that reflects real life, whether through communication development, vocational experiences or independence skills. 

A Culture That Supports and Develops Staff 

Staff described Park Lane as one of the most inclusive schools they had experienced. 

One member of staff commented: “It’s the most inclusive school I’ve ever worked in… it’s inclusion for everyone.” Another added: “It’s just brilliant… you really feel listened to and supported.” Professional development is viewed as a shared responsibility and is closely linked to improving outcomes for pupils. Teaching assistants and teachers work collaboratively, contributing equally to pupil success and demonstrating the school’s commitment to distributed leadership. This creates a culture where staff are not only highly skilled but deeply invested in the success of every pupil.  

Relationships That Change Lives 

Parents consistently described the school as transformative. Many families arrive after difficult experiences elsewhere and spoke warmly about the trust, communication and support they have received at Park Lane. The assessment found that communication between home and school is frequent, meaningful and responsive, helping parents feel confident and empowered in supporting their children. 

Preparing Pupils for Life Beyond School 

Preparation for adulthood is woven throughout the curriculum. Pupils engage in work experience, community activities and independence-focused learning that helps prepare them for life beyond education. Students spoke proudly about their involvement in local businesses and community projects, demonstrating a growing understanding of their future aspirations. The school’s strong partnerships with local organisations and businesses ensure that learning remains relevant, purposeful and connected to the wider world.
