Jubilee Academy Mossley is a vibrant and inclusive school, where children at are the very heart of everything they do. As a small school community, staff work tirelessly to be creative with learning environments and resources. The Principal and SLT understand the needs of the community they serve, and work to expertly support parents and children of the school. There has been a lot of change over recent years, but all have brought improvement and greater inclusion.
Staff have shown a strong commitment to providing an excellent learning environment, even when faced with space limitations. They have maximised every usable space in the school to enhance and enrich the lives of their learners, such as sensory spaces and the Hive room. The staff view the curriculum through a critical lens, making sure the needs of their diverse community are met. Staff have been so vigilant that the curriculum has been rewritten, after reflection showed that the academy approach did not meet the needs of their children. This new approach has shown fabulous results, with pupils and staff flourishing in an environment that uplifts and provides for them. Leadership is continuously looking for ways to bring the wider community into the school; Stay and Play sessions, a reading cafe, and open evenings are all ways the school can engage with new families, allowing leaders to organise referrals and advice services at the earliest opportunity. The school has commissioned specialists, such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists and Inclusion specialists, to work closely with the school and provide support for the children who need them most. This support has made a significant impact on the lives of the young people it serves, and parents speak highly of the far-reaching impact is has had on their children.
The school has shown a commitment to improving literacy and instilling a love of reading in its pupils. Staff were able to identify that children may have had limited access to reading in the past, so worked collaboratively to provide effective strategies to help students catch up. Indeed, they have developed excellent targeted strategies, such as The Reading Cafe on a Thursday morning, where families are invited into the school to hear their children read and share their reading recommendations with other pupils. Not only does this highlight an exemplary commitment to inclusion from the school, but it acts as a source of pride for both parents and children. Pupils can also avail of a book vending machine and library bus to further enhance their literacy learning, while embracing a novelty element to their learning.
Staff show a strong accountability for monitoring outcomes and objectives, and are quick to act to implement important changes. There are active conversations to ensure all communities feel welcomed at the school and staff show good levels of understanding of a range of cultures, faiths and traditions, which they in turn encourage their pupils to adopt. The school uses a translator tool so all parents can easily access information about their children’s educations, from website news to reading letters. The school collaborates with PSCOs to make sure staff are aware of community issues, so families and children can receive the relevant support from the school. Active and open discussions with parents are of the upmost importance at the school, with parents being offered information and support sessions on pressing issues, such as gang and knife crime. Curriculum and welfare support is available to all families, with adaptions being made recently to include uniform support and access to food banks. Parents can say with confidence that they are truly included in the school community.
This confidence in the inclusive nature of the school is felt throughout the community. A commitment to excellent learning for all pupils has ensured that children can embrace the fun and engaging elements of education. They are encouraged to believe in themselves and their ability, with the high expectations set by staff being met with joy and achievement from pupils. Everyone is welcome at Jubilee Academy Mossley – no pupil, member of staff, or parent, is ever left behind.
