Hopefields School has achieved the IQM Inclusive School Award with Flagship status in recognition of its deeply embedded inclusive ethos and its unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child is supported, valued and empowered to succeed within a nurturing and aspirational school community. 

Being BRAVE: A Culture of Hope and Opportunity 

If one word were to capture the essence of Hopefields School, it would be BRAVE. This is a community that demonstrates remarkable courage and determination in its unwavering commitment to creating lives filled with hope, opportunity and success for its students. The school motto is far more than a statement displayed on walls; it is a shared belief that is lived and breathed by every member of staff. Every decision, every intervention and every carefully planned opportunity is designed with a clear purpose: to help students move closer to achieving positive and meaningful futures. 

Transforming Lives Through Strong Relationships 

Parents consistently described staff as welcoming, approachable and deeply invested in the wellbeing of their children. For many families, the school was described as a lifeline. Several spoke emotionally about the difference the school had made after difficult experiences elsewhere. One parent reflected on feeling truly listened to for the first time after contacting the school directly and speaking with the Headteacher. That initial conversation marked the beginning of a journey that she described as life-changing, not only for her daughter but for the whole family. 

Students themselves speak positively and proudly about their school community. Many reflected on the significant changes that attending Hopefields School has brought to their lives. There are numerous examples of young people who previously experienced little or no engagement with education, but who now attend regularly, participate actively and view themselves as successful learners. This transformation is not the result of a single initiative or intervention; rather, it reflects the sustained commitment, expertise and care shown by staff every day. 

Building Confidence Through Communication and Support 

The teaching of vocabulary and communication skills was a consistent feature throughout the visit, both in the classrooms and the books. Instructions had been stripped back but remained clear and concise. Staff routinely used opportunities to develop students’ language and understanding, supported by collaborative approaches and highly personalised provision. Clear expectations and shared agreements between staff, students and families provide structure and consistency, helping to create a learning environment where everyone understands their responsibilities and contributions. The school’s innovative “reset” provision exemplifies this approach, offering students a safe and structured opportunity to regulate emotions and re-engage positively with learning when required. 

The Montana Project: Inclusion in Action 

The Montana Project represents a particularly distinctive and highly effective aspect of the school’s provision. Through therapeutic, animal-assisted learning experiences, students access opportunities that are tailored to their individual needs and interests. Whether feeding animals, caring for them or engaging in reflective conversations with adults, students develop confidence, communication skills and emotional awareness. The integration of Forest School principles within Key Stage Three further enriches this offer, providing sensory-led experiences that support both personal development and practical skills. 

The school’s influence extends beyond its own student population. Through outreach work commissioned by the local authority, young people who are unable to access a place due to capacity constraints are still able to benefit from aspects of the provision. This reflects a wider commitment to supporting the broader community and sharing effective inclusive practice. 

Across every aspect of the review, one message remained consistent: students feel valued, understood and supported. They described learning as enjoyable, engaging and relevant, and spoke warmly about the staff who have helped them believe in themselves. These authentic and trusting relationships underpin the school’s success and represent one of its greatest strengths.
