East Lane Primary School Achieves the IQM Inclusive School Award

East Lane Primary School has achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Inclusive School Award in recognition of its deeply embedded culture of inclusion and commitment to ensuring every pupil is supported to succeed.  

Achievement for All, One Child at a Time  

The Trust’s motto ‘Achievement for all, one child at a time’ highlights how each child is an individual and will be treated as a unique member of the Trust. There is a shared understanding that inclusive practice is everyone’s responsibility. Talking to all stakeholders highlighted to the IQM Assessor that there is truly a culture of inclusion in all areas of school life.  

When school stakeholders were asked to describe the inclusive ethos of East Lane Primary School in one word, they responded with the words ‘Unique, unrelenting, intentioned, together.’  

Learning, Reading and Oracy  

East Lane Primary School are very proud of their reading curriculum and phonics provision. The systems are robust and regularly reviewed and monitored to maintain high standards and ensure gaps in learning are filled, this means progression is accelerated.  

One parent spoke about their child having had a two-year gap not attending school and had started East Lane Primary School last September unable to read. With targeted input, this child is now reading fluently, accessing learning, and attaining well. Oracy skills are encouraged and facilitated so that pupils can speak and listen in a range of contexts and have the vocabulary to say what they want to say with the ability to structure their thoughts, so they are clear and make sense to others and reflect their true curriculum knowledge.  

Leadership That Knows Every Child 

East Lane Primary School have a very hard working, visible and involved Leadership Group. They table Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), safeguarding, attendance, and the vulnerable pupil register as agenda items for every meeting along with the development plan. Attendance has a direct link to pupil attainment, so the Leadership Group personally follow up when a pupil in their phase is away and makes the effort to welcome the pupil back to school when they return. 

Learning Leaders and Belonging 

East Lane Primary School promote pupil leadership roles in various formats which are highly prized by the pupils. 

The Learning Leaders in Year 6 teach pupils in Reception and Year 1 handwriting and reading. The assessor observed a short session where the learning leaders were professionally coaching and praising their assigned pupil and the receiving pupil was responding and developing their skills.  

One parent told the assessor that her child who is in Reception, happened to meet her assigned Learning Leader in the local library and the Year 6 pupil sat down with her child to read to them. It was an awe-inspiring moment.  

Celebrating Every Talent  

East Lane Primary School Talent Show is an important event which showcases pupil’s talents and encourages them to share or perform in front of an audience.  

The school has many talented pupils and has had to hold three semifinals this year to select the finalists for the show which will be performed for parents. It is an opportunity to celebrate pupils who may not be academically or physically successful, but who have special talents to praise and applaud.  

We All Belong  

The whole school International Day is looked forward to as pupils attend school in traditional dress representing their family’s culture. The pupils have opportunities to talk about their culture and language. Pupils create flags and posters to show ‘We all belong.’ It is a day which really celebrates diversity. 

Other special days at school include Racism Day, Children’s Mental Health Day and Neurodiversity Celebration Week, helping pupils understand that we are all unique and special.
