Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s CE Junior School Achieves the IQM Inclusive School Award

Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s CE Junior School has achieved the Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Inclusive School Award in recognition of its deeply embedded culture of inclusion and commitment to ensuring that every child is seen, supported and able to succeed. 

A School Where Every Child Matters 

One of the school’s most impressive strengths is its unwavering commitment to ensuring that every child is known as an individual. During discussions with staff, Governors, parents and pupils, there was a remarkably consistent message that every child matters and that staff will go above and beyond to ensure that barriers to learning are removed. Indeed, the Chair of Governors commented, “I have never known a school where staff do not rest when it comes to supporting children,” a statement which accurately reflects the culture observed throughout the assessment. 

Inclusion in Action 

The school has undertaken a significant inclusion journey over recent years in response to the changing landscape of SEND and the growing complexity of pupil need. Rather than viewing these challenges as barriers, leaders have embraced them as opportunities to further strengthen their inclusive offer. This has resulted in a strong focus on staff development, adaptive teaching, trauma-informed approaches, emotional wellbeing and the refinement of classroom practice. The development of sensory provision, Woodland School opportunities and plans for additional alternative provision demonstrate a leadership team that continues to look forward and proactively anticipates future need. 

Pupils Flourish Beyond the Classroom 

The school’s inclusive ethos extends beyond academic provision. Personal development is a particularly notable strength and was found during the assessment to be of an exceptionally high standard. Pupils benefit from extensive opportunities to participate in leadership, sport, music, outdoor learning, community engagement and wider enrichment activities. Importantly, leaders work hard to ensure that these experiences are accessible to all pupils, regardless of need or starting point. 

Leadership opportunities are abundant; roles such as sports leaders, anti-bullying ambassadors, peer mediators and school councillors enable pupils to contribute meaningfully to school life whilst developing confidence, responsibility and service to others. Programmes such as Woodland School and music nurture provide additional pathways for participation and success, particularly for vulnerable learners. 

Strong Partnerships with Families 

Strong partnerships between home and school are a defining feature of Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s CE Junior School. Throughout the assessment, there was compelling evidence that parents, carers and guardians are viewed as genuine partners in their children’s education, with relationships built on trust, openness and mutual respect. 

Support for vulnerable pupils and those with SEND is a particular strength. Parents described a highly collaborative process in which their views are sought, respected and acted upon. One parent explained how support for their child continued seamlessly while an EHCP was being processed, providing reassurance that their needs were understood and prioritised from the outset. Another parent described how staff responded with personalised support, including opportunities to spend time with Delilah, the school dog, and access targeted wellbeing provision. 

Building Compassionate and Responsible Citizens 

Community engagement is a considerable strength of Baden-Powell and St. Peter’s CE Junior School and reflects the school’s commitment to developing pupils as compassionate, responsible and active citizens. 

Particularly impressive is the school’s commitment to social responsibility. Partnerships with organisations such as Poole Waste Not Want Not, Poole Community Exchange and Diverse Abilities provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to engage with important social issues including poverty, inclusion and community support. 

Music and performance play an important role in connecting the school with the wider community. Events such as Lighthouse performances, Young Voices and collaborations with Soundstorm create memorable experiences for pupils and families while promoting inclusion and belonging.
