Britannia Village Primary School has achieved the Inclusive School Award.
Clear Aims and Objectives
Britannia Village Primary School (BVPS) is a two form entry school with 60 pupils in each year group. Presently there are 458 children on roll, 32 of whom are in the nursery. The school serves a culturally diverse community located in the London Borough of Newham.
BVPS is part of the Britannia Education Trust (BET) along with Royal Wharf Primary School, which opened in September 2018 and moved to its new building in September 2020. The Multi Academy Trust was set up in 2017 with the aim of opening more schools to serve the southwest region of Newham.
Our Assessor thoroughly enjoyed thevisit to BVPS. They extended their sincere thanks to Olaf Moorhouse for preparing and co-ordinating the extensive paperwork and organising the timetable for the two-day visit. Thanks is also extended to the Executive Headteacher Linda May for welcoming our Assessor into the school.
The Assessor met leaders during the two-day visit, all of whom are resilient, creative, and outward looking. They have clear aims and objectives, a strong moral purpose and are committed to providing the children in their care with an equal opportunity to achieve to their full potential, regardless of race, gender, ability or disability.
The collaborative partnership of the Trustees and the Senior Team gives time for strategic thinking and planning to ensure that the school runs smoothly.
Warm, Welcoming and Extremely Helpful
Everybody our Assessor met was warm, welcoming and extremely helpful from the moment they arrived. Over two days the Assessor met with a variety of stakeholders, either in groups or individually. Learning walks afforded me the opportunity to see first-hand how the school operates and to have conversations with a range of staff and children which is always a pleasure.
Children at BVPS thrive within an ethos of Inclusion, Creativity and Excellence, the values and qualities promoted by the school, designed to equip children for life. In addition, children are provided with the resources to become successful learners in a supportive environment, one in which children learn to co-operate, regardless of differences, embracing the notion of “all different, all equal”.
Teachers and Teaching Assistants (TAs) are organised and well planned. Lead teachers were immediately identifiable through their obvious knowledge and skills in whatever they were teaching. Their understanding of their pupils and command of the classroom is excellent.
Classrooms are well organised to support learning with learning walls, displays of the children’s work and clear evidence of the schools’ vision and values.
Feel Safe at School
Children at BVPS reported that they feel safe at school, they trust their teachers and Teaching Assistants and they recognise how hard the staff work on their behalf.
They spoke very positively about their learning and the opportunities afforded to them, both within and beyond the school day, in clubs and through a rich and varied programme of cultural activities.
The children spoken to are clearly very comfortable with technology. The ICT Lead is very ambitious for the children and staff to be the best they can be in this area. As a result, ICT is a great strength of the school.
The positive school climate at BVPS is hugely beneficial to children’s performance on many levels including attendance, assessment, wellbeing and behaviours. Children at BVPS, in general, love being at school and are keen to arrive on time every day. Our Assessor attributed this to the positive learning culture. Good attendance is celebrated and rewarded during whole school assemblies. Children are aware of the importance of behaviour for learning and are encouraged to support their learning by adopting a series of positive attitudes towards it.
Pupils, regardless of ability or background, achieve outstandingly well in English and maths, often from very low starting points.
Teaching is highly imaginative and differentiated to meet the needs of all children. All teachers are teachers of all children.
Children are immensely proud of their school; the behaviour is excellent and, alongside a love of learning, the vast majority of BVPS children are well prepared to move on to the next stage of their education journey. Pupils with SEND make progress and all pupils are motivated to be the best they can be.
This is a truly inclusive school. Leadership and organisation of inclusion at BVPS is highly effective. Safeguarding processes and procedures are thorough and clearly communicated to all.
